The recently published FAA Advisory Circular 150537010G contains new and revised "P" specifications. One of the new additions is P-608 Emulsified Asphalt Seal Coat, recommended for use on all airfield pavements including runways, taxiways, and aprons. Asphalt Systems, Inc.® (ASI) manufactures GSB-88®, an emulsified asphalt seal coat that meets the requirements of this new P-608 specification.

GSB-88® has a long, successful history of airfield pavement preservation and mitigating asphalt-based FOD; over the past 20 years, it has been applied to more than 500 airfields, 350 runways, large commercial airports and high performance military facilities. Applications include varying climates from Florida to Alaska, and Hawaii to the Dakotas. GSB-88® has saved airport owners and agencies millions of dollars by efficiently preserving aviation asphalt pavements, while mitigating surface oxidation - which is by far the leading cause of asphalt deterioration on airfield pavements.

ASI products for the aviation services

GSB-88® has proven to be an exceptional treatment for asphalt runways and asphalt applications. It significantly reduces weathering, the leading cause of maintenance costs for repairing asphalt pavement distress. Tests on more than 200 FAA commercial airfields showed preventive application of GSB-88® dramatically reduced pavement deterioration and even doubled the life of some pavement. In fact, data shows a single application of GSB-88® can extend the useful life of asphalt airfield pavements to between 25 and 50%. This benefit applies mainly to pavements in good to satisfactory condition.

GSB-88 also serves as an interim solution for deteriorating pavement, holding it together until a more permanent remedy can be implemented. This would extend the usefulness of remote airfields while providing substantial cost savings in maintenance costs. An additional benefit of GSB-88® is that it provides a surface treatment with higher-than-acceptable friction value. GSB-88® does not increase structural benefits; however, it significantly retards surface oxidation that leads to structural damage.

Ease of Use:

GSB-88® applies quickly and easily with standard bituminous distributors. Rate of spread is dependent upon the texture, porosity, and age of the asphalt pavement to be sealed. The application generally cures in 2–8 hours. Wet GSB-88® can be cleaned up with water; if dried, it can be removed with degreasing solvents. GSB-88® can be removed from skin with industrial hand cleaners and hand creams.

Types of Uses:

GSB-88® can be applied to grooved and ungrooved runways, taxiways, ramps, and parking aprons. Its performance has been tested under all extreme weather conditions in all regions of the United States.
Technical Data

Base Stabilization:

GSB-88® should be applied only to asphalt pavement that is free from major defects. Cracks should be filled with an appropriate bituminous crackfiller. Excess oil and dirt should be removed, and the surface should be free of loose dust, dirt, and debris.

Environmental Features

ASI products are environmentally friendly for aviation services

Without a trace of toxic, old-school coal tar and with very low VOC levels, ASI asphalt preservation products are “as green as it gets.” The addition of Gilsonite to asphalt preservation products makes ASI products the premier environmental choice. GSB-88® is by far the most environmentally sensitive product available for maintaining and preserving asphalt pavement. It is nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and nonflammable. When still wet, GSB-88® cleans up simply with water; when dry, it cleans easily with degreasing solvents. Skin cleans safely with industrial hand cleaners or creams. GSB-88® is safe to apply and safe to be around.

GSB-88® also reduces the amount of natural resources required to manufacture it, produces less solid waste than other sealers, and minimally impacts global warming. GSB-88® binds and seals completely, virtually eliminating harmful runoff of chemicals and residue.

GSB-88® has been successfully applied on over 500 airport pavement preservation projects, and has safely & effectively treated more than 300 runways. From Alaska to Florida, GSB products have treated more than 80,000,000 square yards of airfield pavements. GSB-88® has been used on all types of pavement surfaces including grooved runways, PFC runways, slurry seal surfaces, and many types of dense graded hot-mix asphalts. GSB-88® has also sealed asphalt pavements servicing various aircraft, from light General Aviation to heavy commercial, as well as heavy & high performance military aircraft.
