CASE STUDY #1
Airfield Type & Location:
A military airfield in the Southwest region of the USA servicing multiple aircraft, including high performance fighters.
Problem:
Premature binder failure (FOD) on critical runway. Standard asphalt emulsions failed to resolve the problem.
Solution:
A heavy application of GSB-88®, along with patching in the most severe areas.
Customer Quote:
A heavy application of GSB-88® was able to return runway to full service and later site visits confirmed that the application remained effective up to the day it was replaced with an overlay 20 months later. Based on observed pavement condition with the facilities’ pavement engineer at 18 months, two months prior to overlay, the GSB-88® application appeared to be able to continue to maintain the readiness of the runway for some time into the future.” — Military Pavement Subject Matter Expert (SME)
CASE STUDY #2
Airfield Type & Location:
A commercial airport in the Southeast region of the USA.
Problem:
Asphalt-based FOD caused from the failing asphalt binder of an aged slurry seal surface treatment.
Solution:
The entire airport was treated with a P-608 preservation treatment employing GSB-88®.
Customer Quote:
Areas of the ramps and taxiways were routinely taken out of service for FOD removal, sweeping, and clean-up. The airport couldn’t gain control of the FOD problem once the binder started failing. Then we had the entire airport treated with a P-608 preservation treatment. The FOD issue was immediately mitigated. The serviceability of the airport increased dramatically simply from the P-608 treatment, which resulted in no loose aggregate." — Airport Manager
CASE STUDY #3
Airfield Type & Location:
A military airfield on the east coast of the USA.
Problem:
Surface segregation and pre-raveling (pre-FOD).
Solution:
Application of GSB-88®.
Customer Quote:
Pavement segregation typically presents vulnerability in the pavement leading to potential early raveling because of its exposure of the inner pavement and lack of fines and binder. Segregation areas are commonly more absorbent of moisture into the pavement interior and generally collect additional water in their larger voids, accelerating surface oxidation. GSB-88® applications to areas of segregation fills those voids, rebinds the overexposed aggregate, and seals the interior from moisture and ultraviolet penetration. In many cases segregation and premature loss of fines indicate a condition that one might call “pre-raveling”. Applications of GSB-88® prevents minor problems from becoming more serious and is a critical part of preventive maintenance of airfield assets." — Military Pavement Subject Matter Expert (SME)
